Smoked Fish (Pheir): Various foods have been smoked by humans throughout its history. Fishes were originally smoked as a preservative. There are, however, various methods utilized world around to smoke fish for its taste and flavour. In Kashmir smoking of fish is generally done for the unique taste and flavour imparted by the smoking process traditionally on the grass. Smoked Fish is locally known as Pheir by the commoners in Kashmir.
